Malmsbury is a small, quiet town with an artistic community, beautiful botanic gardens and significant heritage buildings. There’s also a gaggle of geese that roam freely through the town.
Malmsbury was originally established as a service centre for travellers heading for the goldfields. Its rich agricultural land and gold bearing soils made it a thriving town by the mid-1800s.
Bluestone that was abundant in and around Malmsbury, was quarried to build many significant buildings including the National Trust-listed viaduct. Malmsbury’s historic streetscapes maintain a similar appearance today as they did in its earliest years.

Malmsbury’s geese
No matter where you go, you’re likely to come across a gaggle of geese wandering around the village and botanic gardens. For this reason, it is imperative both residents and visitors drive slowly to protect the geese that contribute to the town’s Beatrix Potter-esque charm. In addition, we kindly request you do not feed them bread or other unsuitable foods and please do not have dogs off lead in the botanic gardens. The geese (and the residents who love them) will be most appreciative.
Stay & Play
Book a stay at Malmsbury’s local vineyard, Zig Zag Wines. Accommodation includes a four bedroom mud-brick house or one-bedroom train carriage that can be enjoyed together or separately. Picture yourself in a French New Wave movie, enjoying an alfresco lunch looking over the vines or curling up with the fire in winter.
Guests are treated to hotel style amenities, including luxury linens, bathrobes and a breakfast hamper of locally sourced produce.
